Apep Side Table

Apep was the serpent ‘lord of chaos’, the opponent of Maat or truth. As the greatest enemy of Ra, the upholder of Maat, their nightly battles represented man’s quest to understand his own mortality. The symbiosis between opposing forces is carried on into the design of the Apep table. Its serpentine form seems to be endlessly coiling around a vortex but the energy is contained by its carved legs.
